bumping this up.  This is still a really cool view.

The sound and music of this game will forever be burned in my mind as a super happy place.  This is one of my favorite games of all time.  The second stage in the clouds during the storm... pretty cool stage. The bonus stages are fun as well.  Hard to pick my favorite stage.

This got a bump because of @retro junkie's post relating it to UN Squadron:

Retro Gaming and Hardware / Evercade: Neo Geo Arcade Colle...

Well, finally I got a hold of the Neo Geo Arcade 1. One Merchant got a new supply so at a good price of 29USD I was able to obtain a copy. The Buzzards and Vultures of eBay did not pick my wallet clean.
Having the Neo Geo Arcade 1 completes my collection of the three available carts for the Evercade and Super Pocket consoles. There had been talk last year of a fourth cart but everything has been silent so far this year. I will keep my ear to the ground. Really, this has been the only series of multi carts coming from Blaze that I can say that every game on the cart is a winner for me. Usually it is one or two games that peak my interest and cause me to consider if it would be worth it. With 14 games on the Super Pocket Neo Geo edition plus the 18 games on the combined carts, that is 32 Neo Geo games total.

The games on this collection,
The King of Fighters 2000
Metal Slug
Shock Troopers
Magician Lord
Sengoku
Ironclad

Ironclad was the one game on this cart that I had not played before. It is a worthy title of your gaming time if you love shmups like I do. Good selection of ships with their strengths and weaknesses. Very satisfying side scrolling "shoot everything that moves" fun.

I received an update on my Evercade VS-R. I now can go into the settings and have the option of MVS or AVS gameplay for the Neo Geo games. Awesome!!! The Super Pockets are not upgradable, so you are stuck with arcade play only.

I play these games with the heavy scanlines option. That is the only way that they look right to me. The Evercade VS-R is the only console that I have owned that does the scanlines correctly.

@Grindspine I bet that looks and sounds awesome lol...  I bet Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube has a potential to look awesome on that TV too.

Also, a tribute to the Wega and that one Unearth DVD of the concert we watched:

LOL... @retro junkie ... of course I had to ask  :))

Quote from: CreepinDeth on January 08, 2026, 10:37:42 PMI think there are a couple of new digital games for N64 that push that hardware to the limit.

This one popped up on my radar from a couple of "Best of 2025" videos and I was able to see why. Love it.
I agree and think it is amazing as well.  In fact, I still think it's amazing.  That's one of the "things" I wanted to do with EGA back in the day... really start supporting and offering a launch base for new products for old consoles (SNES, Genesis, Jaguar... etc etc).

Man... Earthion... I really wish I got the Switch version.  This looks pretty nice on the Genesis.

The 3D effect was cool on Mario Kart 7, the Metroid II remake, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask. I still think that the touch screen was shoehorned into some games (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow in particular), which made some challenges to porting the game to other systems (Like the Castlevania DS collection).

Yeah, same TV that I had in Ft Wayne! It still works and is hooked up to a Sony receiver for Dolby Pro Logic II sound, which works great with games like Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. There is a section where you descend through a spiral staircase and hear the clanging and heavy breathing of a forgotten monster circling around you as you go further down the stairs.

I think that Lament of Innocence on the PS2 and Final Fantasy II on the SNES have been the most recent games I have played with that TV.

The 3DS uses a lenticular tech to produce the 3D image. A very clever way of producing the effect if you want to use it for gaming. It gets rid of the burdensome need for the special glasses. I thought the added slide adjustment for the intensity of the 3D effect was genius on Nintendo's part. It gave control to the gamer whether they wanted it off or on, and just how much you wanted it.

I never used the 3D except occasionally out of curiosity for certain games, like racing games. To me personally it was just a gimmick. There are some games I may have played for a session, but it was never required for any certain game for my own personal gaming experience. It was a more powerful console for gaming that sold me.

I really have strong feelings toward the DS and 3DS line of consoles being the golden years for modern Nintendo gaming. To me, this is my opinion, the Switch is a very lousy successor to the 3DS. It has been a step back. Actually I do not see it as a successor to the 3DS. It is more of a successor to the Wii U. And I personally see the Nintendo line of portables as a thing of the past. It really ended with the 3DS. The Switch Lite is a failed attempt to fill that void, but I don't think they are committed to that console. I really loved the clam shell design of the DS line of consoles.

These are my 3DS consoles in the picture. And I am glad I got them when I did, because the price of the 3DS has skyrocketed to being close to the price of a Switch. Insane!!

And I also have a 2DS, not pictured for obvious reasons. It is a 3DS without the 3D.

General Discussion / Re: What Gaming Trends Have Yo...

I had to set back and think about this for some reason.
I know when I first got into gaming my main fix was shmups, shoot'em ups. Especially the space ones that had this tiny space ship taking on this armada, aliens bent on destroying our neck of the woods.
When I got my Sega Genesis, really my first dedicated gaming console, it came with Sonic. But I picked up Hellfire with the purchase. I never played Sonic, for a long time. I was busy with Hellfire. And whatever shooter I picked up after Hellfire. At one point I started trying Sonic, and from there, I gradually moved out and started trying other side scrolling games. My early gaming was dominated by shmups. I had the original Gameboy with Nemesis permanently in the console back then. But shmups dominating my game time? I cannot say that now. Fighting games was an instant hit when I saw Street Fighter 2 because that was from the arcades. My daughter and I had sessions with the fighting games. We trashed talked the whole time. If you came to our door back then you would think a real fight was going on.

I guess what I have grown into over time was branching out and enjoying the broad field of what gaming has to offer. And not limiting myself to one genre.
