Retro Gaming and Hardware / Re: Atari Flashback Portable -...

I kind-of shy away from these type of releases. (They are charging you for the box, "40th Anniversary.") It is mass marketed toward kids, I am thinking. The kind-of toy your Grandparents would give you. The hardware is usually very cheap for some reason. I mean cheaper than usual. My only experience is with a Sega console that has that same basic design. Not sure who it is that is making those consoles, even though they do give that manufacturer name, only know it is from China. It has some very bad reviews. Many of the reviews target the durability. And it has an SD card slot? Aren't we into micro SD now? The SD is for adding games. And six buttons for an Atari game? Shows this is a basic unit that is used for different "special releases."

This thing is way over priced. Something like this is normally 19 to 29 USD and found in a Walmart, Walgreens, Target, or a Five Below. For this kind of money you can get an Anbernic portable which is a top quality China console. The long link below will take you to what I am talking about. And coming from Aliexpress if the console comes with a micro SD you better believe you will not need to look up and add any roms.

I have a Sega Genesis mini that has been hacked and I can get my Atari fix on that. But I never really got into the Atari 2600 or 7800. I was busy at the time, especially early 80's, getting my family fleshed out, on track, moving down the right road. Having been married in 77 and having our daughter in 82. It wasn't until my daughter was five that I became interested in having a computer, Commodore 64. And finding a computer program in a bargain bin called Bubble Bobble. My daughter and I had daily sessions of that game. That got me into gaming. My first experience with Atari was the Atari Lynx. Which I am busy with now trying to use up a bag of batteries that was from Christmas led candles. Traditions!! Every year I do this.

Quote from: CreepinDeth on February 03, 2026, 10:19:44 PMNot sure yet. Will have to look at my collection. I've honestly forgotten what I have. I do know I have Ocarina and Majora's Mask. I'll probably finish MM before I sell it, if I decide to.

Majora's Mask is such a great game.  It's awesome on the 3DS as well.  I remember playing Ocarina of Time with my Ocarina of Time themed 3DS (smaller one).  That game in 3D is crazy lol.  I also just created a 3DS topic on this.

I will say... it still is a bit crazy to see so many from CDG wanting to start pairing their collections.  I knew I couldn't have been the only one.  If I had more room, I might be a bit more on the side of keeping stuff.

BTW.. as mentioned in my list, I am looking to potentially sell off my MVS cabinet.  I bought it from a Neo member that passed many years ago.  There are many old memories attached to it.  Original CRT, sound.. everything works.  Just need a new board - which works... but long story that I need to fully remember (and make shorter)

I was thinking about this in the Pairing Collection thread... What a crazy invention the 3DS was.  I know the 3DS 3D effects caused headaches for some players and others could not perceive the 3D effects.  Even I limited my exposure to the 3D effects... just wasn't sure about it.

The Nintendo DS (Dual Screen) was cool... but then a 3DS (3D Dual Screen) that presented itself with the capability to show you 3D games without glasses or any other devices... that's pretty cool.

My 1st exposure to the 3DS was Zelda: The Ocarina of Time.  I bought the 3DS bundle with Ocarina of Time (OOT, remember that old acronym?) badged system.   Speaking of badged systems... I miss those old themed systems.  You just don't see that anymore... or at least it's been awhile Switch wise (all other consoles don't seem to do it).  Back on point, it was a bit mind blowing to see this... in 2011 too.   ;D

Honestly, I didn't use the feature that much... it just felt a little funky while using the 3D (eyes/head)... but it was awesome at the same time that they achieved this.  What experiences did you have?  Try to come up with the positives as well as negatives.

Thoughts? comments... post it up!

No one saw this film?  If no one checked it out... it's definitely worth a view.  It is on Prime right now, not sure about other services.

Yeah... I definitely break out Metal Slug as well on several different consoles.  Even the 3DS version of Metal Slug 7 is pretty awesome.

I agree @Grindspine ... this looks really good, especially for the Genesis.  I'm curious on if there are any slow down parts of the game or if they worked those out as well.  The original Metal Slug had some spots of slow down

Quote from: CreepinDeth on February 02, 2026, 10:08:21 PMOh, and I was recently reminded that more 3DS games are starting to fail due to bit rot. Since it's not my main form of gaming, the carts are not getting use. So I'll probably start getting rid of those as well.

3DS hardware is spiking in price. Maybe I'll sell it now while the going rate is high.

Which titles are you looking to get rid of at this time?  Everything?

you know... it didn't used to be my form of gaming.  However, 3DS... Vita... and others really became my form of gaming over the last 8 years-ish.

I've seen this argument before and I do see it coming almost true.

Recently a Jeff Bezos talk from a couple of years ago resurfaced, and in it he mentioned that the future of computing is in the cloud. Not surprising since he owns AWS. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, also recently said similar things. Not surprising either now that they have their GeForce streaming service.

What's happening with the hardware shortage and AI is similar to what's happening in other consumer markets.

There's been a rise in consumer products that have built-in subscription services. Like, for example, cars. Features are now starting to get locked behind subscription models. Appliances are also doing the same thing.

The economy has basically become a system of extracting as much as companies can out of everyone's wallet while we own as little as possible. Not just in the U.S. but pretty much around the world.
