Yes - I have to have one here.  I am not making the distinction of Movie Versus book - They can both be discussed here.

Why?  What started this?  I started reading on Dol Guldur by accidentally stumbling on something.

This thread / Conversation can go wherever... but this is the Lord of the Rings thread.  Post it up!

BLUEVOODU

This started today because I accidentally stumbled across Galadriel "herself threw down the walls" (of Dol Guldur).    This lead me then to the LOTR Wiki page:
Lotr Wikia - Dol_Guldur Here is where I started going down a pretty crazy rabbit hole.

I must say... the rabbit holes of Lord of the Rings (essentially the whole Tolkien Universe) are pretty crazy.  You can get lost in this stuff for awhile.

I never really understood Dol Gudur during any of the movies.   I guess this must be a "you need to re-read the books along with all the side stories."

From the LOTR Site:

QuoteEtymology

Dol Guldur was Sindarin, meaning "Hill of Dark Sorcery," from dol ("hill") and guldur ("dark sorcery"). It was previously known as Amon Lanc, the "Bald Hill," from amon ("hill") and lanc ("bald").[5]

I have the book on CD from when I used to commute an hour and a half to work. It's such an expansive universe that you learn more about it every time you revisit the story. Wiki's do a great job of filling in the gaps

I think I remember you telling me this a long time ago. lol... That struck a memory.   That's a pretty good idea for long drives.   On CD eh... I should look into that for certain trips.

It was pretty cool when the Hobbit movies explored Dol Guldur briefly when Galadriel and Elrond returned to kick Sauron's butt out.

I think I'm going to purchase the <a href="http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/booksbytolkien/silmarillion/description.htm> The Silmarillion at the tolkienlibrary.com</a>.   They have a pretty cool hard bound book.. from many years ago.   Looking into that one.

I bought a nice hard bound book of the Hobbit - The Hobbit on Amazon.   This is the actual book... bought it for a great price about 6-7 years ago...   I guess it was made / published in 1987 if I am correct.   Definitely a very cool book.

That's actually a really cool idea.  It's really hard for me to process auditory information so I've never understood how anybody could just sit there and listen to a book but that makes a bit of sense.  I wonder if I try listening to audio books like that if I'll get better at processing audio information.
moo.

retro junkie

I have the books on an e-reader and also hard-copy. I really like the movies, but I view them totally separate from the books. I enjoy the movies for what they are and do this with all "book to movies." I want to enjoy the movie and not just sit and be critical.

I pull the books out every other year and read them again. I could never listen to an audio book. No my MO.

Speaking of that... we ended up watching all the LOTR movies over the last week. We are going to start he Hobbit movies tonight.

Time to break out the Hobbit book and maybe buy the Silmarillion soon and make it through that book. It's been a long time.

Silmarillion, talk about a book that would be better as a movie..

I love the world and the ideas but keeping up with the language and the goofy names is too much without someone telling it to me and showing me (maybe I just lack imagination). There was something about the book that put me off. I can't put my finger on it but the word pompous comes to mind. To be fair though, I never finished it, I really never got close.

BLUEVOODU

I know they incorporated some of this into the Hobbit movies... but I agree They should bring many of the events surrounding the big battles into movie form.   I'd personally like to see this happen.  There are a lot of stories they could focus on... and a lot of familiar characters they could use.
